Founded in 1987, Friends of Mississippi State Hospital, Inc., is a tax-exempt, non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the work of Mississippi State Hospital (MSH) and informing the public of mental illness and the needs of the mentally ill. Friends helps enhance quality of life by offering a variety of events and programs for Mississippi State Hospital's patients, staff, Community Services consumers and Jaquith Nursing Home residents. Since its inception, Friends of MSH has grown to a dedicated and caring membership of 575 individuals from the hospital staff and support personnel, members of civic and service groups, family members of patients, and individuals from communities in nearly every county served by MSH.
PURPOSE
- To promote public interest in MSH
- To promote understanding of mental health and the needs of the mentally ill
- To encourage support for MSH from civic groups, churches and individuals in the area served by MSH
- To raise funds for projects which will improve the quality of life for the hospital's patients, residents and consumers and provide recognition and support for employees.
PROJECTS
Patient Activities: Fishing Rodeo,
Job Placement Program, Petal Pushers Art and Craft Club, Harry O Steen Golf Classic, Community Services Psycho-Social Rehabilitation Program, Earth Day, Educational Field Trips for Lakeside School, Headstones for gravesites in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Recognition of Patients/Residents for Special Events, Independence Day Fireworks Display.
Employee Recognition Program: Service Award Pins, Employee of the Month/Year Program, Retirement Awards, Employee Appreciation Meal
Annual Fund Raising Events: Farmer Jim Neal Golf Event, Medical Uniform sale, Jewelry sale.
